The problem was that, in terms of luxury, in the world’s seventh most visited city, sumptuous lakeside establishments with 20-foot ceilings are too numerous to count. Something else had to be found to attract clients and prompt people to choose one hotel rather than another, an experience that turns a simple visit into something poetic. To create an impression of escape in classical and renaissance palaces, ceilings were decorated with large paintings of mythological themes, usually greek. The idea here is to take the same concept and update it. Exit ancient Greece: what are today’s mythologies? Stories that everyone knows, that come to us from the cinema, because the cinema is our culture. The cultural dimension of a hotel is tied to desire, and the interpretation of painted ceilings is tied to eroticism. Thus the hotel offers a cinematographic anthology of desire. Each room illustrates the beginning of a story into which the occupants are drawn, inducing a sense of belonging. And this is where luxury comes in: it is in the specific identity and the unusual care and attention put into the hotel. The hotel celebrates simplicity and spirituality as much as it does elegance and refinement. The central idea is to create something quite unlike anything before and provide guests with a magical, exciting and unforgettable feeling. The Hotel is not just a place to sleep; it is a reinvention of the hotel experience for the new millennium.

Revolving Hotel Room Lets You Sleep in Guggenheim

The Guggenheim’s upcoming group show, called “theanyspacewhatever,” features artists who like to “claim the exhibition as their medium.” And what better way to claim the Guggenheim than to spend the night with it? From October 24th to January 7th, Carsten Höller’s Revolving Hotel Room invites guests to stay over at the museum by sleeping in an art installation comprised of three turning glass discs mounted onto a fourth disc “that all turn harmoniously at a very slow speed.”

Vitrolite – Talladega’s Ritz Theatre

Vitrolite was an opaque pigmented glass manufactured by Pilkington Brothers in the United Kingdom and Libbey Owens Ford in the United States. The material was available in various colors and was used for internal and external tiling and façades of buildings from the 1920s to the 1950s. Vitrolite is no longer manufactured.

  1920′s to 1930′s, elegant style of decorative art,design and architecture which began as a Modernist reaction against the Art      Nouveau style. It is known by angular, symmetrical geometric forms. One of the classic Art Deco buildings is New York’s Chrysler    Building and Empire State Building. The Empire State Building was  designed by architect William Van Alen.

Geschiedenis

Het eerste geheel gestoffeerde meubel ontstond halverwege de 19e eeuw. Dit meubel, de crapaud staat op korte, ronde, gedraaide pootjes die zijn

 

 weggewerkt achter een rondom onderlangs geplooid rokje. Deze crapaud had geen armleuningen, en een door een stalen buisframe rondgevormd gestoffeerd gecapitoneerde rug. Capitoneren betekent dat er knopen zijn aangebracht die rondom vier plooien veroorzaken, zoals bij de bekende Chesterfield meubels (zie tekening rechts).

Er werden in de 19e eeuw, ook wel “Lelijke Tijd” genoemd naar een spraakmakende tentoonstelling, veel meubelstijlen uit voorbije stijlperiodes geïntepreteerd, vaak zelfs meerdere stijlperiodes in een meubel. Kenmerkend voor deze periode was dat de meubels comfortabeler en protseriger werden. De geheel gestoffeerde canapé en sofa volgden in de lijn van de crapaud. Ook de pouf ontstaat in de 19e eeuw, geheel uit stoffering bestaande of op kleine pootjes achter een geplooid rokje.

Men hechtte in deze periode steeds meer aan huislijke gezelligheid en veiligheid, hetgeen tot uitdrukking komt in een overdaad aan opberg- en bijzetmeubeltjes, die eerder in de weg stonden dan praktisch waren. Kamers werden van de buitenwereld afgesloten door overdadig gedrapeerde gordijnen en ook voor het bekleden ervan werd steeds meer stof gebruikt. Tot de 19e eeuw hadden meubels voornamelijk uit hout bestaan al dan niet voorzien van houtsnijwerk. Comfortabel zitten werd in eerste instantie alleen bevorderd door losse kussens en later steeds meer gestoffeerde delen op rug, zitting en armleggers. In de 19e eeuw kwam het beroep van stoffeerder tot bloei en overwoekerende groei, omdat zijn werk in het interieur steeds bepalender werd.

Vormgeving

Er zijn meubels die vanwege vorm en functie alleen gestoffeerd hun vorm kunnen krijgen. Denk maar eens aan grote oude fauteuil, waar je helemaal in wegzakt. Al het hout is hier inwendig en ondergeschikt aan de gestoffeerde vormen, alleen de pootjes zijn misschien nog zichtbaar. Denk ook aan modernere klassiekers van eigen bodem uit de collectie van Artifort in de jaren ’70: “enkel organisch, rond en zacht vormgegeven”. Nergens is hout zichtbaar of zelfs aanwezig.
