“abondonment”

“Presence deals with the idea of subsistence in renounced spaces, and the prevalence of identity within unwanted houses or structures . The quarters documented vary from being semi-abandoned (people about to move to newer houses) to those soon to be demolished. These interiors represent a young culture that came to life, post the oil boom, nearly thirty years ago. Now, with the need to be “modern” taking over, cultural extinction is sadly inevitable, and a new identity is forming. The fast rate with which these structures are being renovated, or formed, leaves very little time to grieve over these spaces.”

 “We Are Leaving Here Forever”

Part of the installation; “the six rooms”

There is almost nothing in these six rooms, accept papers with text and drawings hanging on the walls. Papers cover the walls and the floors of the abandoned building; innumerable announcements instructions, rules for the use of communal areas, slogans, exhortations, schedules… Pictures, letters, notes, diaries, bulletins. Nobody knows what lies ahead. Many are sorry to leave the old bilding; nobody understands why it was necessary to give up everything so suddenly and to depart for an unknow destination.

Part of the installation; “the countryard”

Trashy objects, spaced 30 cm from each other, tied to a rope… A small empty box, a jar lid, old crumbled bags, and so on…Under each of them is placed a small marker with text. The text consists of two or three lines- fragments of statements made by childeren who are gathered in the countryard and awaiting there future. The texts are extremely tense, tragic, and full of the most contradictory feelings expectation, hope, pain.

There are 320 such text fragments in all, corresponding to the number of objects hanging above them. So, the entire countryard becomes a highly electrified, dramatic space, a “sea” of sorrow and hope.

Concept; the final minutes before the human souls abandon “this” world.

Nothing remains but a sea of useless papers, in wich merciless orders, precise timetables, touching letters and notes are all mixed together. Some recall the past and mourn for it.

Almost all are full of terror before the imminent uncertainty that awaits them.
